Pearls are an organic gem created by living creatures. A pearl begins when a foreign particle enters the shell of a mollusk (an oyster or a clam). The mollusk secretes layers of a protective substance, coating the particle with nacre to create a pearl.

The AAA-A Pearl Grading System
Pearls are often graded on scale from AAA to A, with AAA the highest grade. This grading scale is common to freshwater and saltwater pearls.

• AAA: Highest-quality, virtually flawless pearl. The surface has the highest luster, and 95% or more of the surface is free from defect.
• AA: The surface has the highest luster, and 75% or more of the surface is free from defect.
• A:  A lower luster pearl that has surface defects covering more than 25% of the pearl.

Ultimately, the beauty of a pearl is a matter of personal taste. Many of the most brilliant and desirable pearls don’t fit into the standardized grading system.
